God of War (PS2) recompiled natively for PC

By Tgames · · 2 min read

The first God of War, released on PS2 in 2005, runs natively on PC thanks to two static recompilation projects, without going through an emulator.

Kratos on PC, without PCSX2

After God of War III Remastered, it is now the very first installment's turn to arrive natively on PC. Two independent projects released their versions the same week. Both translate the game's MIPS code into C++ ahead of time, then compile it into a Windows program: for the most part, the game is no longer executed instruction by instruction, as PCSX2 does.

God of War — Native PC, the more advanced one

God of War — Native PC, by Vnnc1, reached version 1.0.0 on October 25, followed by 3.0.0 and 3.0.1 on the 31st. It is built on PS2Recomp, supplemented by Waffle565, KIexster and the Tobiichi port.
  • A launcher that installs everything in three steps, then prepares and compiles the game from your ISO: about 24 minutes since 3.0.0, compared with an hour before.
  • An F1 menu for live graphics settings (filters, FXAA, frame limit), cheat codes and memory card copying.
  • Keyboard, mouse and controller, with a classic or modern layout.
  • Fan translations are recognized: with several ISOs, the launcher asks for the language.
The author warns that the project is not finished: 60 fps does not hold everywhere. On their test machine (Xeon E5-2666 v3 and Radeon RX 580), 3.0.1 goes from about 51 to 57 fps on average, and to 55 fps in busy fights. It requires 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, a processor with SSE4.2 (four cores recommended) and 8 GB of memory, 16 GB during compilation. Texture packs and a Linux version are planned.

gow-pc-port, the other project

gow-pc-port, by danielalves96, released its first version, 0.1.0, on October 31, for Windows (installer or portable archive) and Linux, as experimental (.deb and AppImage). Its recompiler is written in Rust, and its OpenGL 4.6 renderer goes from 1× to 6× the original resolution. It supports widescreen (16:9, 16:10 and 21:9, with the PCSX2 patch), the game's videos, PCSX2 memory cards and texture packs, a cheat menu (F2) and RetroAchievements.

What you need

Both projects require your own disc of the US version, SCUS-97399, and provide no game files: everything is built on your PC. The executables are not signed; only download them from the repositories listed in the sources. To play the rest of the PS2 library, see our PCSX2 tutorial.
