Blast Corps recompiled natively for PC, Mac and Linux

Blast Corps, Rare's Nintendo 64 demolition game, runs natively on PC, Mac and Linux thanks to N64Recomp, with widescreen and smooth frame rates.

Rare's classic, recompiled

Released in 1997, Blast Corps has you clear the path of a missile-laden truck by demolishing everything in its way. Blast Corps: Recompiled, by SlaveOfIDO (GPL-3.0 license), turns it into a native program thanks to N64Recomp, which recompiles the cartridge's code, and RT64 for rendering. The game's decompilation, by the same author, is published separately.

Four versions in one week
  • 1.0.0 on October 23, for Windows, macOS and Linux (Flatpak, Steam Deck included).
  • 1.0.1 on the 26th: frame pacing fixed and RT64 updated.
  • 1.1.0 on the 28th: rumble, enabled by default.
  • 1.1.1 on the 29th: rumble no longer gets stuck when changing levels.

What it brings

High definition, uncapped frame rate (the display's refresh rate by default), with no effect on the game itself, widescreen and ultrawide, instant loading and low latency. Mods and texture packs are installed by dragging the files onto the window. The project states that no generative AI was used, and rejects contributions that use it.

What you need

You need the ROM of your own cartridge, North American version 1.1: the program reads the game data from it, which is not provided. Hardware-wise, a Direct3D 12 or Vulkan 1.2 graphics card or an Apple Silicon Mac (or 7th-generation Intel on macOS 13), and a CPU with SSE4.1 on PC.

N64Recomp is also the tool behind Banjo Recompiled, whose authors had expressed concern about an AI-written Banjo-Tooie port.
