Monster Hunter GU and Freedom Unite run natively on PC

By Tgames · · 2 min read

Two projects bring Monster Hunter natively to PC: Generations Ultimate from the Switch, Freedom Unite from the PSP, with online play.

MHGU Recomp: Generations Ultimate at 240 fps

MHGU Recomp, by morerokk, recompiles the 32-bit ARM code of Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (Switch version 1.4.0) into C, and replaces the Switch's operating system and its NVN graphics library with its own version, on Vulkan. Launched on October 22, it is already at 0.12.0, released on the 31st with keyboard and mouse controls. Its author calls it “fully playable”.
  • Adjustable frame rate from 30 to 240, with fixes for the usual high-frame-rate speed bugs.
  • Widescreen at any aspect ratio, resolution, MSAA, FXAA and supersampling.
  • Online multiplayer on working servers, public or with friends (“Local Wireless” menu), and village quests playable with others.
  • Most mods install into a folder, including Forge ones, and cheat codes in Atmosphère format are read.
It requires Windows 10 or 11, or Linux (Steam Deck included), a processor with AVX2, a Vulkan 1.2 graphics card and 4 GB of memory. The game's exefs and romfs folders come from your own Switch, update 1.4.0 included; the project provides no files or keys.

MHForever: Freedom Unite, from PSP to PC

MHForever, by Mango77x, does the same with Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on PSP. All three versions are playable: European (ULES01213), North American (ULUS10391, since October 26) and Japanese (Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, since the 29th).
  • 30 fps as on the console, or 60 to 180 fps through interpolation, as an experimental feature.
  • Online play since 0.6.0 (October 28), on PPSSPP's ad hoc servers: you hunt with other MHForever and PPSSPP players. 0.8.0 adds private lobbies and friends.
  • HD texture packs made for PPSSPP, since 0.8.2 (October 30).
  • Saves in PSP format, importable from a PSP or PPSSPP.
It runs on Windows and Linux, and requires the image of your own UMD. Other PSP Monster Hunter games are planned. To play the PSP version on other devices, see our PPSSPP tutorial.
