Image unavailable (removed by its host)This Tutorial will allow you to completely disassemble your PS3 and repair it
First of all we will need:
-A Phillips screwdriver
-A Torx 10 key
-A fine-pointed knife
-Thermal paste (Arctic Silver 5 in 3.5g) don't take cheap thermal paste(about 8-10€) about 2.5g will be enough
-Acetone
-Cotton swab
-A hair dryer (of the missus )
-A Beer, at the end to celebrate the rebirth of your PS3
Disassembly
Unplug all cables and place your PS3 on a clear, clean place and especially without children around Image unavailable (removed by its host)
Remove the hard drive cover and the warranty sticker and the rubber cover under the sticker. Image unavailable (removed by its host)
Slide the PS3 shell towards the hard drive as in the photo. Image unavailable (removed by its host)
Then remove the seven screws (red circle) Image unavailable (removed by its host)
After removing the cover (you will hear the clips come apart) Image unavailable (removed by its host)
We are now in a very delicate part: under the Blu-Ray drive (which must be handled with infinite caution) you will see this connector, NEVER PULL IT, pull the black tab upwards, slowly. then unplug the electrical connector
Remove the two screws on the SD card support, then below unplug the ribbon with great care Image unavailable (removed by its host)
Then we tackle the three screws behind the power supply Image unavailable (removed by its host)
Then the one in front, as well as the connectors. Image unavailable (removed by its host)(Before removing the power supply block, unplug the small coaxial cable connector (black wire) and remove the strap on the side of the PSU, you can now remove the block.) Image unavailable (removed by its host)
Then remove the 4 screws and the motherboard (in red) Image unavailable (removed by its host)
Then remove the 10 screws (in red), then the coaxial connector (in green), Then the 4 screws of the processor supports (in pink) Image unavailable (removed by its host)
Flip the motherboard and remove the fans Image unavailable (removed by its host)
Then the plastic shrouds will remove themselves
Cleaning
Now we will proceed to cleaning
BEFORE Image unavailable (removed by its host) Image unavailable (removed by its host)
With a cotton swab soaked in acetone, clean the two plates (fan side and motherboard side), don't hesitate at all
Here is the result after cleaning
AFTER Image unavailable (removed by its host) Image unavailable (removed by its host)
Then we will apply the thermal paste like this: Image unavailable (removed by its host)
If you have thermal paste left, make small dots to fill the holes
To finish this operation, put back the support, where the fan was by pressing hard on it.
Then I took my wife's hair dryer to heat the motherboard and especially the two processors (about 5 minutes for the board, insist on the red areas)
Image unavailable (removed by its host)
Flip your board and heat the stainless steel part of the fan so it's nice and hot, then finish reassembling and here's the result: External content (video or audio) hidden: it sets its own cookies.
Remontage

I didn't know about the 200h break-in period, that's maybe why I had to redo the process every 3 weeks on my 60g 1st generation even with the silver5
I just got hold of a fat 60GB CECHC (not downgrade compatible ) no pad with led green then yellow then flashing red. I have neither a hair dryer nor a heat gun. So I'll test the tutorial next week.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained
speaking of clichés... it would have been nice to add close-up photos of the screws (head and profile). super handy for reassembly when you no longer know what goes where. For me it's too late. total mess... plouf, plouf... and to specify that some cross-head screws that aren't deep unscrew with a flat screwdriver and not a phillips screwdriver.
otherwise there's something wrong in the tutorial... the hair dryer thing
the goal of the operation is to make with the means available a... I can't find the name anymore...
a video!!?? :

anyway... since we can't change the solder itself, we can at least restore the soldering's integrity by heating the desired spots. Solder's low melting point is between 185° and 225° depending on the alloy mix. So I'm wondering... What is the temperature of a hair dryer!!??^^'
next, you can read pretty much everywhere "use a heat gun set to 350°". That's the internal temperature... It must be above 225° because once blown, it's lower. 250° should also work but would need a longer time.
There's still the exposure time on the components... With a heat gun set approximately to 350° (mine has a variable regulator from 1 to 15 with temperature leds showing 150°, 250°, 350°, 500°, 650° ). I heated some random board at 1 to 2 cm distance, in a circular motion. after 20s the biggest solder joints were still hard. For the solder joints to regain a bit of integrity, the solder needs to go back through a... let's say... liquid state. Between 25s and 30s, it was good. so I'd say for our gear, between 30s and 35s, would be good, given the fact that our component is less accessible than the ones in my test.
On the other hand I noticed that if the solder was liquid, the pads or traces weren't hot enough. the ideal would be to arrange to position the board so as to be able to heat the board from below for 20s then from above for 25s without moving the board. The slightest movement and it's dead. (Never move the board while it's hot).
there's my opinion on the hair dryermode... heat gun (who has the means to do a timed test with a hair dryer??? )
- the oven case.
my opinion is mixed.
for:
- all the components' solder joints and the pads/traces heat up.
- temperature better controlled. convection oven mode is a plus.
against:
- all the components heat up. risk of damage for some
- the whole motherboard heats up. risk of PCB warping
any comment or contrary opinion will be welcome to move the debate forward
a good example of what not to do : External content (video or audio) hidden: it sets its own cookies.
edit: a labeling system like a furniture assembly diagram would be better I think. Head/profile photo of each screw, labeled V1, V2, etc with a mention of QxL and the tool's symbol/value. Then labeling V1, V2, etc on the photos that already exist.
heating a board upside down is risky... the component could fall under its own weight same with the oven, double-sided PCB ^^'
As prevention: clean (air blower, vacuum) the ps3 as often as possible. After the warranty ends (1 year) and any possible goodwill gesture (about 3 months), disassemble the PS3 in order to replace the thermal paste. Repeat the operation every year. Arctic silver 5 is the thermal paste to recommend.
other comments?
edit 2: I have another opinion on how to spread the thermal paste... I'm looking for the demonstration/explanation video for you. Not sure I'll find it again

and one more ps3 repaired, one!!!! On the other hand I struggled a lot to sync the drive mechanism that the previous owner had disassembled to get a dvd out I'll make you a tutorial with photos as soon as I can
Hair dryer or heat gun MANDATORY if you want to give a bit more life to your console.
Why, because when you heat your motherboard, all the micro solder joints will reform automatically, because during a YLOD, some solder points are no longer there, so the more it heats up the better it is!
By the way I didn't specify in the tutorial that when heating certain motherboards you might hear cracking, well that's NORMAL.
As for alcohol, or acetone, doesn't matter as long as it's alcohol-based!!!!
For my part I use either acetone or a hand disinfectant solution (from work) which is alcohol-based but doesn't exceed a PH of 7
Si je peux me permettre,
