ghostldr: PS4 games on a non-jailbroken PS5

By Tgames · · 1 min read

ghostldr runs PS4 game dumps and homebrew on an unmodified PS5, from firmware 13.60 up, inside a PS2 game from the Store.

A PS4 game inside a PS2 game

ghostldr, by asylumexp (MIT license), runs your own PS4 game dumps and OpenOrbis homebrew on a stock PS5, without a jailbreak. Everything happens inside Star Wars Racer Revenge, a PS2 game sold on the PlayStation Store.

No kernel exploit

The loader relies on Luac0re, by Gezine (version 2.4b): a userland exploit that goes through the game's just-in-time (JIT) compilation. No kernel flaw is used: you stay in the game's sandbox, with no access to the system.
  • The project claims every PS5 firmware from 13.60 up, with the US (CUSA03474) or EU (CUSA03492) version of Star Wars Racer Revenge.
  • Ghost of Tsushima 2.18 is playable: it is the most tested game. Bloodborne 1.09 is too, loading, gameplay and saving included.
  • Games run from an exFAT USB drive, with no install, and load faster than installed ones.
  • An ELF loader lets you send other programs from a computer.
On PS4, only homebrew and small games work: the system caps PS2 games at 2.5 GiB of memory, while Ghost of Tsushima needs about 4.

What you need to know
  • You need to own Star Wars Racer Revenge, install Luac0re in it, and have a dump of your own game.
  • No public test confirms yet that it works on the current firmware, 14.20.
  • Nothing stops Sony from patching the flaw, through a system or game update: if you want to take advantage of it, avoid updating.
