Steam on a jailbroken PS5: Bazzite in Steam Deck mode

By Tgames · · 2 min read

PS5 Bazzite Deck boots a jailbroken PS5 into the Steam Deck interface from a USB drive, without touching the console's system.

Steam Deck mode on PS5

PS5 Bazzite Deck, by Gilles (VivaLaVent), adapts Bazzite, the gaming-focused Linux, to the PlayStation 5. The console boots straight into Steam's Gaming Mode, the Steam Deck interface, and a full KDE desktop is one click away. The first public release dates from 20 October 2026; version 1.1.0 came out on 23 October.

What works
  • output in 4K at 60 Hz over HDMI with sound, and hardware video decoding;
  • since 1.1.0, 1440p at 120 Hz and at 60 Hz if the display offers them;
  • Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Bluetooth: the DualSense connects wirelessly;
  • since 1.1.0, all 40 compute units of the GPU are active instead of 36. If you get crashes or graphics glitches, an option in the cmdline.txt file goes back to 36;
  • updates without reflashing since 1.0.3, and installing apps through Discover and Flatpak.

What you need
  • a jailbroken PS5, any model except the PS5 Pro, on a firmware supported by rmux's PS5 Linux loader. Tested on 13.60;
  • a USB drive or, better, an external SSD of at least 32 GB, and a PC to write the image to it with Rufus;
  • in the PS5 settings: HDMI Device Link turned off, and USB power in rest mode set to “Always”. Otherwise, black screen or back to the menu.
The PS5 is not modified: everything is on the drive. Unplug it and the console is back to normal. There is no dual boot: you run the jailbreak and then the loader every time. The first boot is slow, and the screen can stay black for a few minutes. Installing to the internal M.2 SSD is possible, but the USB drive is still needed to boot.

Two precautions
  • the default password is ps5, and SSH is on since 1.0.7: change it with the passwd command, or anyone on your network can log in;
  • HDR doesn't work yet: turn it off, and set the RGB range to “Full”.
To find out which firmware can be jailbroken, see our PS5 jailbreak tutorial. Linux on PS5 had already booted Ubuntu on 13.60, and Playden already runs Steam games another way.
