Linux on PS5 on 13.60: Ubuntu boots, even on the PS5 Pro

By Tgames · · 2 min read

The ps5-linux project now supports firmwares 13.00 to 13.60, and a fork boots Ubuntu on the PS5 Pro: the console becomes a Linux PC, experimentally.

What's new

ps5-linux turns a jailbroken PS5 into a real Linux PC, relying on hypervisor flaws. Until now limited to firmwares 3.00 to 7.61, it now supports 13.00, 13.20 and 13.60. This support was added to the project's code on 18 and 19 October 2026, but the latest published release is still v2.5 from 5 September: for now, you have to compile it yourself.
The same weekend, on 19 October, developer Sonic-Iso released a fork with a ready-to-use loader for 13.60, PS5 Pro included: the Pro is detected at boot and the same file works for both models. It has been booted to the Ubuntu desktop on real consoles.

What Linux gets out of the PS5

According to the project:
  • the 8 cores (16 threads) at 3.5 GHz and the GPU at 2.23 GHz, with a tool to adjust clock speeds and fan control;
  • the HDMI output in 4K at 60 fps, with audio;
  • an M.2 SSD dedicated to Linux, all USB ports, Bluetooth and the internal Ethernet port;
  • hardware video decoding and encoding (VAAPI).
The project considers this enough to run Steam games and many emulators.

What you need
  • A jailbroken PS5 on a supported firmware, with an ELF loader (port 9021).
  • A USB drive of at least 64 GB, ideally an external SSD, with the project's Ubuntu image, plus a USB keyboard and mouse.
  • In the settings: USB power supply in Rest Mode set to “Always”, and HDMI Device Link disabled.
  • etaHEN and kstuff must be disabled, otherwise the console freezes instead of entering Rest Mode.
The loader puts the PS5 into Rest Mode; pressing the button again boots Linux, and the light turns white.

Good to know

The fork says it at the top of its page: 13.60 support is experimental, and stability (USB, display, peripherals) is not guaranteed. It also recommends not updating a console on 11.60 or lower. The flaw that makes all this possible is the one from Byepervisor Reborn, and these firmwares are jailbroken with Relapse.
