GTA 6 reportedly requires PS5 firmware 14.10: should you give up your jailbreak?
2026 update: PSN would now require firmware 14.10, and 14.00 is being refused access; read on in our news story PS5 14.10: PSN reportedly locked out on 14.00 consoles, jailbreak stuck.
Data spotted on 2 October on the PlayStation Store indicate that GTA VI may require firmware 14.10.00.00 or later. The game comes out on 19 November 2026: owners of a jailbroken PS5 have six weeks to decide.
Why this is a real problem
The Relapse jailbreak covers firmwares 7.00 to 13.60. A console deliberately kept on one of these versions therefore could not launch GTA VI. And since there is no way to downgrade on PS5, updating to play means permanently giving up on your console's jailbreak. It is a one-time choice.
What Sony has done on its side
Firmware 14.00 was released before Relapse was made public: so it is not a counterattack, contrary to what you can read just about everywhere. On 1 October however, a few days after the exploit was published, Sony rolled out 14.10 (26.06-14.10.00), with the usual “system performance improvements”.
What is not established
We are writing this with caution, and here is why:
Our advice
Look at the question this way: what is your console for? A jailbroken PS5 is for homebrew, emulators, backups and tools; it has never been for playing new releases from the Store, and GTA VI does not change that rule. If the game is your priority, keep an up-to-date console — a second console if you want both. If the jailbreak is what matters, do not update, and make sure automatic updates are really turned off.
To check where your firmware stands, see PS5 jailbreak: which firmware, what really works; for what you can do with it, PS5 homebrew in 2026.

We are writing this with caution, and here is why:
- Neither Rockstar nor Sony has announced this requirement. It comes from reading the Store data, not from a statement.
- Nothing suggests that Rockstar is targeting the jailbreak. A game still in development often requires a recent firmware for a far more mundane reason: it is compiled with a recent SDK.
- The threshold may still change before 19 November.
