Kodi finally arrives on jailbroken PS5: hardware decoding, HDR10 and Python add-ons

By Tgames · · 2 min read

Sony never released Kodi on the PS5: a native port of Kodi 22 now runs on the jailbroken console, with hardware video decoding and HDR10.

A native port, not an Android app

The kodi-ps5 project, by VivaLaVent, adapts Kodi 22 to the PS5 system. It installs like a game, on the home screen, with an interface rendered in 4K by the console's graphics chip. Development has been remarkably fast: 0.5 on 25 September 2026, 0.9 as early as 30 September.

What it can do
  • Hardware video decoding: H.264 (8-bit), HEVC (Main and Main 10) and VP9 (profiles 0 and 2), so 4K without making the console's fans roar.
  • HDR10 and HLG, and VRR, matched to the video's frame rate.
  • Multichannel 5.1 and 7.1 sound (PCM).
  • Playback from the network (SMB, NFS), internal storage or a USB drive, and Internet access, with the PS5's native keyboard (since 0.8.1).
  • Since 0.9, a built-in Python 3.14 interpreter: Kodi add-ons written in pure Python work, including the TMDb scrapers that fill your media library with posters and synopses.

The limitations
  • “Binary” add-ons, and Python ones that need compiled modules (inputstream.adaptive, Pillow…), do not work. Streaming add-ons that depend on them are therefore ruled out for now.
  • 4K at 60 frames per second may stutter, and 12-bit or 4:2:2/4:4:4 HEVC falls back to software decoding.
  • With the move to 0.9, data has changed location: you need to set up your sources again.

What you need to install it

A PS5 jailbroken with a HEN that gives kernel access (etaHEN, for example), ShadowMountPlus or an equivalent loader, and an FTP server. Copy the files to /data/homebrew/, then re-register the title. Note: the kodi-ps5 repository has just been archived. Its author says development continues under a new name, PS5MC, which is set to support Kodi 22 and Kodi 21. Beware of copies using the project's name.
