PS Vita: RuffleVita runs Flash games, and LinuxOnVita 1.3 gets a desktop

By Tgames · · 1 min read

More than seven years after production ended, the PS Vita is getting two remarkable homebrews: RuffleVita, which runs Flash games, and LinuxOnVita 1.3.0, which installs a Linux desktop on it.

RuffleVita: Flash games on the Vita

Developer Ibrahim Dogan has ported Ruffle, the open-source Flash emulator that took over from Adobe Flash Player after it was discontinued in 2020. Released on 28 September as FlashVita and renamed RuffleVita the next day, it is now at version 1.2.0, published on 4 October.
  • Version 1.1.0 added “Explore”, which browses a catalogue of around 6,000 Flash games over Wi-Fi.
  • Version 1.2.0 precompiles two engines widely used by Flash games (Box2D and Alternativa3D): Happy Wheels runs about twice as fast.
  • The heaviest ActionScript 3 games remain slow: the Vita has its limits.

LinuxOnVita 1.3.0: a real desktop

Released on 28 September by devwithzachary, LinuxOnVita boots a Linux 6.12 kernel on the console, on an Alpine base. Version 1.3.0 adds a lightweight graphical desktop, IceWM, which takes up only about 25 MB of memory, and a web browser. There is no graphics acceleration: it is a technical curiosity rather than something for everyday use, but an impressive curiosity.

What you need

Both require a Vita with HENkaku or Ensō. If yours is not hacked yet, our tutorial PS Vita: HENlo on 3.74, then Ensō explains everything, whatever the firmware.
