Sonic the Hedgehog (2006) recompiled natively on PC

Soleanna 0.1.0 recompiles the 2006 PS3 Sonic into a native PC game, with no emulator, from your own disc: 83 levels, 18 bosses and 4K support.

Sonic 06 on PC, with no emulator

On 4 November 2026, DrummingBird1 released Soleanna 0.1.0, an unofficial PC port of Sonic the Hedgehog, the 2006 Sonic, in its PS3 version. It is a static recompilation: the game's PowerPC code is translated into C and then compiled for x86-64 processors, and rendering goes through Direct3D 12. So there is no emulator at all while you play. The project builds on ps3recomp, with 47 changes of its own, under the MIT license.
The repository contains no SEGA code or data: the launcher builds the game on your PC from your own disc, the European version BLES00028, as an ISO or a folder. The other PS3 versions have not been tried, and the Xbox 360 version is an entirely different program.

What works in 0.1.0
  • the title screen, menus, cutscenes and story up to the city of Soleanna, with music and voices;
  • the 83 level entries and 18 bosses start without crashing, in tests of about a minute each. But nobody has finished a level from start to end yet;
  • story scenes hold the game's 30 frames per second, and Wave Ocean runs at 57-59 fps on an RTX 4070 SUPER, including in split screen;
  • an internal resolution of up to 3840 x 2160, filters, FXAA, graphics presets, mouse camera control and two keys per action;
  • Xbox, DualShock 4, DualSense and Switch Pro controllers via SDL2, not yet tried with a real controller. The original game's bugs are still there.

What you need
  • 64-bit Windows 10 or 11, 8 GB of RAM or more and about 10 GB free. No Linux, Mac or Steam Deck for now;
  • RPCS3, which is only used to decrypt the EBOOT.BIN from your disc;
  • time: the launcher installs the build tools (LLVM, CMake…), copies the disc, then compiles the game. Allow 14 to 17 minutes on a fast PC with 32 GB, longer with less memory.

Caution

The author's account dates back to 2012, but the repository is only a few days old, and Soleanna-0.1.0.exe is not signed: Windows will show a warning. Only download it from the project's GitHub page. The author says they worked with a lot of help from the Claude AI, as their commits also state. The port has only been tested on a single PC: a hardware report, whether the game works or not, will help the project. Otherwise, RPCS3 remains the proven solution, as shown by its tally of 80% playable games.
