Switch 2: DOOM and a homebrew menu with IZ2S Platform

By Tgames · · 2 min read

IZ2S Platform adds a homebrew menu to the Switch 2 ns2jb jailbreak, and IZDOOM runs DOOM on it, computed entirely by the graphics chip.

A homebrew menu for ns2jb

The Switch 2 ns2jb jailbreak goes through SmileBASIC 4. IZ2S Platform, by IZMYSH (GPL-2.0 licence), builds a complete environment on top of it: a control panel on the PC, and IZlauncher, a menu shown on the console, with search and touch controls.

What you need
  • A PC running Linux: Windows and macOS are not supported.
  • An ARM board running Linux that can act as a USB keyboard, plugged into the Switch 2's USB-C port: it types the bootstrap program into SmileBASIC.
  • A Switch 2 on 23.0.1 with SmileBASIC 4.4.9, the versions the project targets.
The bootstrap is saved in a SmileBASIC program slot (slot 0 by default), whose contents may be overwritten: back it up first.

The modules
  • File Exchange, included: an FTP server on port 2121, limited to SmileBASIC's folders (/save and /tmp writable, /rom read-only). It is not access to the whole console.
  • BlitBun: streams a PC program's picture and sound to the Switch 2, with controller forwarding.
  • VacooTube: a YouTube player controlled from the console, with the app running on the PC.

DOOM on the graphics chip

IZDOOM 0.17.1 (28 October) ports DOOM in an unusual way: the game logic runs in a RISC-V (RV32) interpreter executed by the console's graphics chip, and shaders draw the world, the sprites and the interface. There is no sound or music yet. The module includes the first episode of the shareware version 1.9, which is freely distributable; the data of the retail version is not provided.

The platform is at version 0.16.0-rc.5 (27 October), a pre-release. The developer warns that their checks on the PC do not guarantee how it behaves on the console itself.
