COGBox recompiles Gears of War 2, Gears of War 3 and Judgment from the Xbox 360 into native Windows games, up to 5K and without the 30 fps cap.

Three Gears of War games recompiled

COGBox, by Shagg88 (MIT license), is a launcher that turns the Xbox 360 versions of three Gears of War games into native Windows games. The PowerPC code is translated ahead of time (static recompilation), and a custom renderer draws every frame in Direct3D 12, or in Vulkan as an experimental option.

What it brings
  • A resolution from 1 to 4 times the original, up to 5K, or matched to your monitor.
  • SMAA, AMD FSR, NVIDIA DLSS and Intel XeSS.
  • No more 30 fps cap, vsync matched to your monitor, and lower input lag (NVIDIA Reflex, AMD Anti-Lag 2).
  • Keyboard and mouse, Xbox and PlayStation controllers, chapter select, and Gears 2's split-screen.

Which games, which versions
  • Gears of War 2: US disc with Title Update 6. Every chapter plays in testing.
  • Gears of War 3: disc with Title Update 6, playable.
  • Gears of War: Judgment: Title Update 4 is required for now; playable.
The first Gears of War is not a priority, because of its many versions. Testing is done on the developer's PC (RTX 3080 Ti): AMD cards are still shakier, and a test build fixes damaged surfaces and shadows on those cards.

The repository opened on October 27, and version 0.2.2 from October 28 adds automatic updates. You need your own discs or Games on Demand copies: no game files are included.
