Zelda Tears of the Kingdom recompiled natively for PC

By Tgames · · 2 min read

Two projects turn Tears of the Kingdom into a native Windows program, with no emulator: TotK Recomp, up to 144 fps, and UltraTears, in beta.

After the Mac, the PC

After the port to Mac, iPhone and iPad, Tears of the Kingdom comes natively to PC. Both projects translate the game's ARM code into x86-64 code ahead of time (static recompilation), and replace the Switch system and its NVN graphics library with their own versions, on Vulkan.

TotK Recomp, the most complete

TotK Recomp, by valentderah (MIT license), opened its repository on October 29 and released version 0.1.1 the same day: more than 7,000 downloads in a single day.
  • The base game with the 1.2.1 or 1.4.3 update, with saves that carry over between them.
  • 60 frames per second by default, and up to 144 fps or the monitor's refresh rate, as an experimental option.
  • Custom resolutions, supersampling and AMD FSR 1.
  • Keyboard, mouse and gamepad, with rumble and gyro.
It needs Windows 10 or later, an x86-64 CPU with AVX2, a Vulkan 1.3 graphics card that supports the VK_EXT_external_memory_host extension, and about 36 GiB free during setup (20 GiB afterwards). The repository states that most of the code is written by AI coding agents (Claude Code), under the direction of the maintainer, who tests every build.

UltraTears, in beta

UltraTears, by kuraeow (GPL-3.0 license), released its 0.1.0 beta on October 25. It only works with version 1.4.3 of the game and keeps its original 30 fps, with stutters while shaders compile. It needs 16 GB of RAM and about 32 GB free, plus 16 GB for the game dump. Linux and the Steam Deck are planned.

With your own game

Neither project ships any Nintendo file: you have to dump the game from your own console, and the resulting program is built on your PC, for your own use only. Also beware of copies: fake repositories often reuse the names of trending projects. Only download from the repositories listed in the sources.
