Switch 2 emulator: where things stand after the jailbreak

By Tgames · · 2 min read

The ns2jb jailbreak has opened the Switch 2 up to researchers, but no emulator runs the console's games yet: here is where the projects stand.

No playable Switch 2 emulator

As of 25 October 2026, no public emulator runs Switch 2 games. Sites offering a ready-to-use "Switch 2 emulator" download are selling hot air or worse: it is the same trap as the fake PS5 emulators. What does exist are early-stage projects and, for the past few days, material to study.

Pound, the most followed project

Pound describes itself as a "Switch 1 and 2" emulator, open source (GPL-3.0 licence) and "highly work in progress". It has more than 1,100 stars on GitHub, and development is active: on 25 October, its main contributor added initialisation of the emulated console's memory.
The team has made a radical choice: betting everything on Ballistic, a new ARM recompiler written from scratch. It is a rewrite of dynarmic, the engine that translated the Switch 1's processor in yuzu and its successors, to fix its flaws. Its goals include handling pointer authentication (PAC) instructions, absent from the Switch 1 but present on the Switch 2.
Pound's task list shows how far there is to go:
  • translate the shaders of the Switch 2's Nvidia GPU (SM86) to Vulkan: not started;
  • write the memory managers for the system and the recompiler;
  • integrate Ballistic into Pound.
Pound builds on Linux and Windows, with the Clang compiler only. It does not run any games.

What the jailbreak changes

To emulate a console, you need to understand its system. Until now, the Switch 2's stayed closed. Since ns2jb, the console's files can be read: the first games have been dumped, and a fork of the jailbreak now copies the code of the system programs. On 24 October, borntohonk, author of the Switch-Ghidra-Guides and of the sys-patch module, also opened a repository for diffing Switch 2 binaries and carrying over what is known about the Switch 1. It is still empty.
Some perspective is needed: ns2jb only compromises the fs module, with no kernel access, and has to be re-run at every boot. Reverse engineering a whole system takes months, not days.

The legal context

Nintendo had yuzu shut down in 2024 and goes after projects that make piracy easier: we covered this in our news on Switch emulation and GitHub. On the Switch 1 side, the current trend is recompiling games natively, as suyu does. An emulator is only legal to use with games and system files extracted from your own console.
Questions about emulation belong in the forum, in Switch & Wii U Questions/Help.
