The Darkness on PC: the 2007 Xbox 360 game recompiled as a native port

2026 update: Forza Horizon has now been recompiled for PC as well, with an online server; read on in our news story Forza Horizon recompiled for PC: 144 fps and online play brought back to life.

Never released on PC, The Darkness (Xbox 360, 2007) is coming to it through recompilation: The-Darkness-Recomp runs it natively, in 4K and on ultrawide screens.

A port through recompilation

The project The-Darkness-Recomp, by Porting Pete, translates the game's Xbox 360 program into C++ for PC ahead of time: the game runs as genuine Windows software, with no emulator. Releases are coming thick and fast: 0.1.2 on 27 September, then 0.1.6 on 10 October 2026.
  • 4K, ultrawide screens, vertical sync, frame rate and field of view settings.
  • Native PC controls (since 0.1.4), a launcher and achievements (0.1.5).
  • SMAA and MSAA anti-aliasing (0.1.6), and launch tools for Linux.

What you need

64-bit Windows 10 or 11, a Direct3D 11 graphics card, and your own copy of the Xbox 360 game: the download contains no game files. To dump your games, see Xbox 360: copying your games to a hard drive.

Good to know

This is a very young project: its author warns that not everything has been tested, and the campaign may not be playable all the way through. Another notable detail: OpenAI's coding assistant, Codex, is listed among the contributors, and several fixes are credited to it, as Time Extension pointed out. Other porting projects for the same game are under way in parallel.
After Spider-Man: Edge of Time, this is another Xbox 360 game ported with this method: our article on the Spider-Man port explains the current wave.
