Seta GX 0.4: the Sega Saturn runs on Wii, thanks to a custom recompiler
2026 update: on PC, Kronos 2.8.0 fixes over 100 Saturn games and Ymir moves to 0.4; the full story is in our news story Sega Saturn: Kronos 2.8.0 fixes over 100 games, Ymir moves to 0.4.
The Saturn is known as one of the hardest consoles to emulate: two SH2 processors, two graphics chips, and an architecture that Sega itself considered convoluted. Running it on a Wii was thought to be out of reach. Seta GX 0.4, released on 4 October 2026 after eighteen months of silence, proves otherwise.
What changes the game
An SH2 dynamic recompiler written for the Wii's PowerPC. Instead of interpreting the Saturn's instructions one by one, the emulator translates them into the console's processor instructions, in blocks, and reuses the translation. It is the same principle as the big PC emulators, and it is what turns the project from a curiosity into something playable.

The rest of version 0.4
- Improved VDP1/VDP2 rendering; transparency is promised for the next version.
- New menu with paginated lists, and box art (.png images 128 pixels wide and at most 216 pixels high).
- Video output in native 240p and 480i, for a faithful picture on a CRT.
- Controllers: GameCube, Wiimote, Classic, Wii U Pro, and even N64. The Wii U Gamepad is supported, but requires a separate procedure.
- Files CUE/BIN and CHD, on SD card or USB drive, stored in vgames/Saturn.
What you need to know before trying it
- You need the Saturn BIOS (bios.bin), dumped from your own console.
- The author says it himself: the project is experimental. Crashes and freezes come with the territory.
- This is the last version built on the Yabause code. What comes next will be a rewrite, and games that work today could stop working.
