Banjo-Tooie on PC: an AI-written port angers the Banjo Recompiled developers

2026 update: the race for AI-made ports pushed decomp.dev to close its leaderboard; read on in our news story decomp.dev shuts down its leaderboard: decompilations versus AI.

A PC port of Banjo-Tooie, largely written by AI, appeared in early October, and the creators of Zelda and Banjo Recompiled are strongly denouncing it.

What happened?

A GitHub user published an unofficial Banjo-Tooie Recompiled. Its own readme admits that artificial intelligence tools “generated a significant portion” of the code. The name invites confusion with Banjo: Recompiled, the much-loved PC port of Banjo-Kazooie.

The developers' response

DarioSamo, who works on Zelda64Recomp (Majora's Mask) and Banjo: Recompiled, stated that this project had nothing to do with his team, and that their projects strictly refuse AI-generated code. He considers these ports “disrespectful” towards decompilation work and sees them as a “race to the bottom”. An issue opened on the repository also asks for a disclaimer stating that it has no connection with Banjo: Recompiled.

Why it matters

Recompilation ports, such as Zelda64Recomp, rely on months of painstaking work. “Slopcomps”, as the community calls them, promise the same result in a few days, but with no guarantee of quality or ongoing support. The debate also involves the Harbour Masters team (Ship of Harkinian), which has a more open policy on AI.
Our advice: for Banjo-Kazooie, use Banjo: Recompiled. For Banjo-Tooie, there is no community-recognised port yet: be careful before installing an unknown executable.
