[TUTORIAL] Bricked Wii in 2026: identifying the problem and fixing it (Priiloader, BootMii, error 003)

Black screen, “The system files are corrupted”, error 003: a “bricked” Wii can almost always be repaired, provided you first identify the problem.
The word “brick” is scary, but most Wii lockups are software issues, and can be fixed if the right tools were installed beforehand. This guide follows the procedures of the wii.hacks.guide reference guide.


First of all: the two tools that save the day

• Priiloader (0.10.0): it starts before the Wii Menu. On Wii, hold Reset at power-on to open it. It lets you launch the Homebrew Channel even when the menu no longer starts.
• BootMii and its NAND backup (the files nand.bin and keys.bin): a complete copy of the console's memory, to be restored as a last resort.

Identifying the type of brick

• “The system files are corrupted”, or a channel that freezes: this is a banner brick, caused by a badly made channel (WAD). Uninstall it from the Homebrew Channel launched through Priiloader, or from maintenance mode (hold + and − on the health and safety screen).
• Black screen after the health and safety screen: incompatible theme (theme brick) or corrupted message board. Reinstall your region's original Wii Menu (csm-installer or the menu WAD) from Priiloader.
• Error in Wii Settings (“You tried to access the address…”): menu or theme from another region (semibrick). Same remedy: the menu for the right region.
• “Error:003 unauthorized device has been detected”: a Korean Wii whose region was changed, then updated. Priiloader lets you reinstall the old menu; without it, you need recovery mode and a modchip.
• Black screen, but the Wii Remote responds: often the Wi-Fi module, faulty or disconnected. This is a hardware fault.
• No response at all, even before the health and safety screen: low-level brick (boot0/boot1). No software can fix it.

Restoring a NAND backup with BootMii

1. Open BootMii (from the Homebrew Channel: HOME button, Launch BootMii; or at startup if BootMii is installed as boot2).
2. The Wii Remote does not work in BootMii: Power to move, Reset to confirm, or a GameCube controller.
3. Choose the gears, then RestoreMii. A simulation screen appears first.
4. If BootMii is installed as an IOS, the actual restore requires a GameCube controller and the Konami code: Up Up Down Down Left Right Left Right B A Start.
5. “I HAZ SUCCESS!”: it is fixed.

Never use another console's backup, or an unverified backup. On the Wii mini and Wii Family Edition, restoring requires a hardware modification.


What about Wii U (vWii mode)?

BootMii cannot be installed on vWii. A bricked vWii is repaired with vWii Decaffeinator, launched from Aroma, followed by a system update, following the wiiu.hacks.guide guide. See also our vWii tutorial.


A NAND backup is also useful for Dolphin

In the Dolphin emulator, Tools > Manage NAND > Import BootMii NAND Backup… imports your backup: your channels, your Miis and your saves end up on PC.


⚠ Warning: most bricks come from WADs of unknown origin, themes from another region, or updates on a modded console. Install Priiloader, keep two copies of nand.bin and keys.bin, and read our tutorial on installing WADs safely.

Avant tout : les deux outils qui sauvent

• Priiloader (0.10.0) : il démarre avant le menu Wii. Sur Wii, maintenez Reset à l’allumage pour l’ouvrir. Il permet de lancer la Chaîne Homebrew même quand le menu ne démarre plus.
• BootMii et sa sauvegarde de la NAND (les fichiers nand.bin et keys.bin) : une copie complète de la mémoire de la console, à restaurer en dernier recours.

Reconnaître le type de blocage

• « Les fichiers système sont corrompus », ou une chaîne qui fige : c’est un banner brick, dû à une chaîne (WAD) mal faite. Désinstallez-la depuis la Chaîne Homebrew lancée par Priiloader, ou depuis le mode maintenance (maintenir + et − sur l’écran d’avertissement de santé).
• Écran noir après l’avertissement de santé : thème incompatible (theme brick) ou messagerie corrompue. Réinstallez le menu Wii d’origine de votre région (csm-installer ou le WAD du menu) depuis Priiloader.
• Erreur dans les paramètres Wii (« You tried to access the address… ») : menu ou thème d’une autre région (semibrick). Même remède : le menu de la bonne région.
• « Error:003 unauthorized device has been detected » : une Wii coréenne dont la région a été changée, puis mise à jour. Priiloader permet de réinstaller l’ancien menu ; sans lui, il faut le mode de récupération et une puce.
• Écran noir, mais la Wiimote répond : souvent le module Wi-Fi, défaillant ou débranché. C’est une panne matérielle.
• Plus aucune réaction, même avant l’avertissement : blocage bas niveau (boot0/boot1). Aucun logiciel ne peut le réparer.

Restaurer une sauvegarde de la NAND avec BootMii

1. Ouvrez BootMii (depuis la Chaîne Homebrew : bouton HOME, Launch BootMii ; ou au démarrage si BootMii est installé en boot2).
2. La Wiimote ne marche pas dans BootMii : Power pour se déplacer, Reset pour valider, ou une manette GameCube.
3. Choisissez les engrenages, puis RestoreMii. Un écran de simulation s’affiche d’abord.
4. Si BootMii est installé comme IOS, la restauration réelle demande une manette GameCube et le code Konami : Haut Haut Bas Bas Gauche Droite Gauche Droite B A Start.
5. « I HAZ SUCCESS! » : c’est réparé.

Jamais la sauvegarde d’une autre console, ni une sauvegarde non vérifiée. Sur Wii mini et Wii Family Edition, la restauration demande une modification matérielle.


Et sur Wii U (mode vWii) ?

BootMii ne s’installe pas sur vWii. Un vWii bloqué se répare avec vWii Decaffeinator, lancé depuis Aroma, puis une mise à jour système, en suivant le guide wiiu.hacks.guide. Voir aussi notre tutoriel vWii.


Une sauvegarde de NAND sert aussi à Dolphin

Dans l’émulateur Dolphin, Tools > Manage NAND > Import BootMii NAND Backup… importe votre sauvegarde : vos chaînes, vos Mii et vos sauvegardes se retrouvent sur PC.


⚠ Attention : la plupart des blocages viennent de WAD d’origine inconnue, de thèmes d’une autre région ou de mises à jour sur une console modifiée. Installez Priiloader, gardez deux copies de nand.bin et keys.bin, et lisez notre tutoriel sur l’installation des WAD sans risque.
