Atlantis: The Lost Tales (Cryo 1997) "Perfect Edition" V1.1 by Tgames

ENGLISH PART :

This version of Atlantis is the perfect version of the game (from the DVD edition, without all the bugs of the CD editions).

Modified by Tgames in order to no use anymore the DVD and get savegames working.

This version doesn't have the guards bugs, no sfx bugs neither.
It works perfectly when the player reach the hangar and saves are working.

NO CD to mount, just extract everything to C:\ hardrive.


Setup :
--------------

0) Extract the zip to the root of C:
It must be C:\CRYO\ATLANTIS\
OR if you choose another folder and drive letter (like D:\CRYO\ATLANTIS\) you MUST do THAT :

Change :

@="C:\\CRYO\\ATLANTIS"

by the drive letter you have extract the game and the path to the game .exe.

For example :
Drive : D:
Path to the game : D:\CRYO\ATLANTIS\ATLANTIS.EXE

1) Launch setup.reg
2) Set Atlantis.exe as "Launch as Administrator".
3) Launch Atlantis.exe !

PARTIE FRANCAISE :

ette version d'Atlantis est la version parfaite du jeu (tirée de celle DVD, dépourvu de tous les bugs présents sur CD).

Modifiée par Tgames afin d'être utilisable sans le DVD et que les sauvegardes fonctionnent.

Cette version n'a pas le bug des gardes, ni des bruitages.
Elle fonctionne parfaitement au passage au hangar et a bien les sauvegardes fonctionnelles.

Elle ne nécessite AUCUN CD, ni rien à monter, simplement extraire le tout dans le lecteur C:\


Installation :

0) Extraire l'archive au root du lecteur C:
Celà doit donner C:\CRYO\ATLANTIS\
OU si vous choissisez un autre dossier et lettre de disque dur (comme D:\CRYO\ATLANTIS\)
vous DEVEZ faire CELA :

I'm quite impressed by the quality of your release! It's cleaner than the work of "professionals" on well-known old game sales platforms

What differences do you make between the GOG version and your Perfect Edition on the technical side? (I bought the GOG version a while back already, but I don't remember what it "gives")

It's THE most accomplished version of Atlantis Secret d'un monde oublié for Windows 10.
It was tested from the beginning to the end of the game by about 10 testers.
The notable differences compared to GOG:

- No texture bug on the guards (you'll notice that in quite a few versions you no longer see their masks)
- No texture bug on Actyon (you'll also notice that in quite a few versions you don't see part of his beard).
- No issue with certain missing sound effects
- NO bug when changing zones that used to require swapping the CD (a famous, very annoying bug that has always bothered players quite a bit; on GOG the issue was partially fixed (but crashes could still happen) HERE, since 1 update of my version, no crash to report at those times, no problem at all
- No CD swapping needed (the version is based entirely on the DVD version that Cryo had released)
- 100% compatible with Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 (32/64 bit)
- Notable improvement to the issue of very slow or extremely fast speed (it will never be perfect but it's much better this way).
- No super slow mini-games! ONE of the big problems of the GOG version.

Thanks for these details.

I'm running into the famous "guards bug" both with the GOG version (on the 2nd pair of guards) and with your version (on the 1st pair of guards); even though, as you point out, on the Perfect Edition the guards' masks don't disappear at least.

I'm going to try playing with the compatibility settings as recommended on other forums. If you have any suggestions for a solution, I'm all ears

Look, you should have this with my version (for all the guards in the game):

Make sure you haven't enabled any compatibility mode (you don't need any mode).

That your game is installed in C:\CRYO\ATLANTIS and that you have run setup.reg.

I installed the game and everything works fine except I get ERR. disk full messages at the start of the game and the music is never there.
Did I miss something?

For info, I installed it on D:\ following the modification to be made to the registry.

This problem is a sign of missing registry keys for the game OR an incorrect entry of the path to the installation directory.

[1] Did you run setup.reg as administrator and confirm adding the registry keys after modifying it?

[2] What is the exact path where you installed the game? Because be careful, this path needs to be copied exactly into setup.reg

[3] Could you try installing the game in C:\CRYO\ATLANTIS and running setup.reg (the original, unmodified one)?

[4] Did you properly remove any compatibility mode from the game's executable "ATLANTIS.EXE" and run it as administrator?

The game needs to know the game's installation directory via a registry key in

I didn't specify the type of bug I was experiencing; as you note, the graphics don't glitch on the Perfect Edition (I can see the guards fine like in your screenshot). I'm getting the dialogue bug: at best I can talk once with the guards, at worst it crashes as soon as I speak to them (the game freezes and the music starts looping). Even if I keep the conversation to a minimum (showing the companions' symbol to the 2nd pair of guards), I get an immediate crash. So I can't progress in the game.

It's a hyper-recurring bug that affects a very large number of players; the proposed solutions are always the same:

playing with compatibility settings (Win98 / WinXP SP2 / WinXP SP3, disabling visual themes, etc.)
running the game with a single processor core

Unfortunately none of that worked for me, neither on the GOG version nor on the Perfect Edition.

You're welcome, I'm here for that

The fact that the freeze happens on a dialogue comes from a problem with the registry key being missing or the path to the game being written incorrectly. Exactly the same problem as the user PsykoSeb.
Having reverse-engineered the game, I know that the crash issues largely come from that (and another memory management issue that I fixed when you go through the hangar).

There's no effect from your processor or graphics card, because in my version it doesn't really use your graphics card. Instead it emulates an Nvidia GeForce4 4800 Ti graphics card (so that no configuration can cause a problem). It's only in my version that your real graphics card isn't used directly, but instead serves to emulate a graphics card that's 100% compatible with the game.

So I'm 99% sure that your problem comes from the registry key, follow exactly what I recommended above.

Just so you know, the game runs (without the slightest other modification) on:

- Windows 10 Pro 64-bit
- i7 6700K (4.6GHz, 4 cores, 8 Threads) = nothing disabled, everything maxed out
- Nvidia GTX 980 Ti 6GB
- 16GB DDR4

And the game is installed in C:\CRYO\ATLANTIS, run as administrator, no compatibility mode, nothing touched on either my graphics card or my processor.

With PsykoSeb we're at 15 testers with several different configurations (from gaming PCs to office PCs), all of them ended up getting the game to work perfectly (once their registry key issue was fixed).
Except maybe if you have a processor made for PC tablets, in which case I imagine the game won't run.
But normally 99% of existing PC and laptop configurations (x86 and x64) should run the game without crashing.
With or without a dedicated GPU (integrated GPUs still run the game thanks to the GPU emulation I mentioned above).

Emulating an "old" graphics card is a very interesting workaround for compatibility issues! I hope this technique gets used more often for our good old, often finicky, PC games on modern systems and hardware (especially the 3D ones, of course).
So they're all barking up the wrong tree with their compatibility settings stories...

I had indeed followed the instructions in the readme that you included in the Perfect Edition, regarding the registry modification with your pre-configured file setup.reg

I checked and currently:
- The game is indeed "installed" in the directory C:\CRYO\ATLANTIS (in other words I did unzip the file at the root of my C: drive)

- The registry key has indeed been modified

- I also tried running again setup.reg, just in case, but I still run into the bug...

I'm going to try a "clean install" of the game again, notably doing a small registry cleanup, and I'll let you know. If it still bugs out, I gladly accept your TeamViewer offer

In the meantime, can you test this version (which removes the graphics card emulation as well as the 1080p resolution, but uses DxWnd instead)?
I pre-configured the game so it can run via DxWnd, to see if it's not rather the graphics card emulation and forcing the game to 1080p that's causing a problem with your setup.

It seems to be working alright without freezes (the Perfect edition is always freezing for me too). Unfortunately for me it is in French though. I like the option of Dxwind too!

I own a retro PC with Windows 98SE (Pentium 3, TNT2, 128MB SD RAM) and I play the original 4CDs version of the game on that system, but I want to be able to play your perfect edition too on my Win10 desktop.
