From Xbox 360 to Xbox Series: RGH, JTAG and Dev Mode
With Microsoft, the possibilities vary greatly from one generation to the next. Here's a quick overview, from Xbox 360 to current consoles.
Xbox 360: the reign of RGH
The Xbox 360 had a very rich scene thanks to JTAG then RGH (Reset Glitch Hack), which allow booting a modified system. These methods generally require hardware intervention (soldering, chip) and a good dose of patience, but open the door to homebrews, content managers and game saves. Recent variants have made startup much faster and more reliable than their early days.
Xbox One and Xbox Series: official Dev Mode
Recent consoles don't have a mainstream custom firmware. On the other hand, Microsoft officially offers a developer mode: by opening a developer account, the console can switch to an environment where you can install your own applications. This is how emulators like RetroArch run on Xbox Series, completely legally.

Good to know
- Developer mode separates commercial games from development applications: you switch from one to the other by restarting.
- On Xbox 360, a modified console must not be connected to official Xbox Live.
- Hardware modifications require a minimum of soldering experience: don't hesitate to ask for advice before you start.
