Installing a custom firmware (CFW) on a Switch lets you run homebrew, emulate older consoles, back up your saves to the PC and play your own games from the SD card. This guide starts from scratch: checking whether your console is eligible, then installing Atmosphère and hekate without breaking anything.
1. Is your Switch compatible?
That is the only question that matters, and it is settled before any purchase or download. There are two families:
First-generation “Erista” Switch, unpatched (the very first ones, sold from 2017 to mid-2018): they have a flaw in the Tegra chip, fusee-gelee, which Nintendo cannot fix with an update. Everything is done with no soldering and nothing to buy, whatever firmware is installed.
Patched Erista, V2 “Mariko”, Lite and OLED: the flaw is fixed at the factory. You need a modchip, so disassembly and fine soldering. That is not what this guide is about.
How to tell which one you have
Read the serial number in Settings > System > Serial Information (more reliable than the label under the console, which may have been replaced).
Serials starting with XAW1, XAW4 or XAW7 are Erista units. Only some of them are unpatched, and the batches are mixed: only a test really settles it.
The test that does not lie: put the console into RCM mode (see step 4) and connect it to the PC. If the injection tool recognises it, it is unpatched. If not, it is patched.
A Switch 2 is affected by none of this: today there is no custom firmware, no modchip and no homebrew launcher for that console.
2. Where things stand on 3 October 2026
Atmosphère 1.12.0 (27 September 2026) and hekate 6.5.4 / Nyx 1.9.4 (28 September 2026) support firmware 23.0.0.
Firmware 23.0.1, released on 30 September 2026, is a simple fix and it is supported as well: that is confirmed by the community reference guide.
Two traps in this version: fusee-primary no longer exists in Atmosphère 1.12.0, you have to use the file fusee.bin; and the hekate 6.5.4 archive was put back online on 28 September at 15:30 UTC to fix a sleep-mode defect. If you took it in the very first hours, download it again.
3. What you need
A microSD card of 64 GB or more, formatted in FAT32 (the recommended format: exFAT works but corrupts data more easily on this console).
A jig for the right Joy-Con rail (a few euros), or a folded paperclip, or a piece of wire: it is only a matter of bridging two pins of the rail.
A USB-C cable that carries data (many cables only charge) and a PC running Windows, Linux or macOS.
The two official archives: atmosphere-1.12.0-master-….zip and fusee.bin on Atmosphère's releases page, and hekate_ctcaer_6.5.4_Nyx_1.9.4.zip on hekate's. From GitHub only: the “all-in-one” packs found elsewhere often contain outdated modules that stop the console from booting.
4. Installation, step by step
Format the SD card in FAT32 and put it in the PC.
Copy the contents of the Atmosphère archive to the root of the card (the atmosphere and switch).
Copy the contents of the hekate archive to the root, accepting the folder merge. You must end up with a bootloader folder at the root.
Put the card back in the console and shut it down completely (hold Power for 3 seconds, then Power Options > Turn Off).
Go into RCM mode: remove the right Joy-Con, insert the jig into the rail, then hold Volume + and press Power. The screen stays black: that is normal, it is the sign that it is working.
Connect the console to the PC and inject the file hekate_ctcaer_6.5.4.bin with your injection tool (TegraRcmGUI on Windows, NXLoader from an Android phone). The hekate menu appears on the console.
Make a NAND backup before anything else: Tools > Backup eMMC > eMMC BOOT0 & BOOT1, then eMMC RAW GPP. Count on about thirty GB on the SD card, and keep that copy somewhere safe: it is your only insurance if anything goes wrong.
Create an emuMMC: Tools > emuMMC > Create emuMMC > SD Partition. It is a copy of the system installed on the SD card, in which you will do your experimenting. Your original system stays untouched.
Boot the CFW: Launch > Atmosphère emuMMC. On boot, the console logo is slightly different, and Settings > System shows the version followed by a suffix.
5. After the installation: not getting banned
Nintendo does not ban for the mere presence of a custom firmware: bans target uses, that is, piracy and online cheating. The simple rules:
Always work in theemuMMC, never in the original system.
Do not go online from the emuMMC. The usual method is to block Nintendo's servers with a DNS redirection file; no method offers an absolute guarantee, consoles have already been banned despite that block.
Do not touch official online play or the eShop from the CFW.
6. Updating, in the right order
The rule never changes: update Atmosphère and hekate first, the console firmware after. The emuMMC firmware is installed with Daybreak, the tool that comes with Atmosphère, from a firmware dumped from your own console (with nxdumptool, TegraExplorer or Goldleaf). The details are in our tutorial updating Atmosphère and hekate.
7. The most common errors
The tool does not see the console. Nine times out of ten it is the cable (it only charges) or the jig badly inserted. Otherwise, the console is patched.
Black screen after the injection. Check that the bootloader folder really is at the root of the card, and that you injected hekate's file and not something else.
The console boots, then crashes. That is almost always system modules that are not compatible yet. Empty sd:/atmosphere/contents/ and restart: if everything settles down, put them back one by one.
“Failed to launch” or error 2168-0002. The Atmosphère files and the hekate version do not match: take both archives again in their versions from the same day.
The SD card keeps getting corrupted. Format it in FAT32 rather than exFAT, and be wary of counterfeit cards bought online.
⚠ Careful: this guide only concerns unpatched first-generation Switch consoles. On the other models, the “software methods” promised by certain videos or certain sites do not exist: they are scams or malware. And back up your NAND before anything else.
Tgames provides no games, no BIOS files and no keys: only use backups of your own games and your own console. Got a question? Reply to this topic.
« Failed to launch » ou erreur 2168-0002.
