EverDrive creator Krikzz is working on a solderless PS1 ODE
Krikzz, the creator of the EverDrive, is working on a drive emulator for the PS1: it plugs in in place of the CD drive, with no soldering, and loads games as ISOs.
An EverDrive-branded ODE
On 15 October 2026, Krikzz, the developer of the EverDrive cartridges, announced on X an optical drive emulator (ODE) for the original PlayStation. The idea behind an ODE: replace the CD drive with a board that reads ISO images of your games from a memory card, with no disc. A prototype was shown installed in a PSOne.
What we know
An already crowded market
Krikzz admits to arriving "a bit late". The PS1 already has its ODEs, such as the xStation, and the ArcStation is already shipping to customers. The EverDrive's reputation, and the lack of soldering, could make the difference. To play your PS1 discs without touching the console, there is still emulation: see our DuckStation tutorial, or FPGA with the MiSTer.

What we know
- It plugs in where the CD drive connects: there is a bit of assembly, but no soldering, so the modification is fully reversible.
- The USB-C port visible on the board is only used for development.
- No price, release date or list of compatible PS1 models has been announced: the project is in active development.
