Playdate: update before 15 October, or the console will no longer reach the servers

By Tgames · · 1 min read

Panic is warning Playdate owners: a security certificate expires on 15 October 2026, and consoles that are not up to date will no longer reach its servers.

What happens on 15 October

The security certificate used by older versions of the Playdate system software expires on 15 October 2026. After that date, a Playdate still on an old version will no longer be able to connect to Panic’s servers: no more updates, and no more Season game downloads. The console will keep working, and so will the games already installed.
Panic sent the warning by e-mail to registered owners and on its social networks, just as it kicks off Season 3 (two games a week for four weeks, since 8 October).

What to do

You need at least version 3.0.5 of the system software; the latest one is even newer.
  1. Fully charge the Playdate.
  2. Connect it to Wi-Fi.
  3. Go to Settings > System > System Update and install the update.
A recently purchased Playdate is probably already up to date: check anyway, it only takes a minute.

What if you missed the date?

All is not lost, but it will be “much more complicated”, according to Panic. The update would then have to go through a computer and the Playdate software development kit (SDK), available on Windows, macOS and Linux. So it is better not to wait.
